Runners up beat champions in URLQ opening round

posted on
University of Queenland Hounds have stunned Griffith University Logan Redbacks with a 28-4 victory in the opening round of the Universities Rugby League Queensland.

In wet conditions the runners up were able to put their grand final counterparts easily disposed of the champions but it was a hard fight early on.

Logan halfback Matt Oliphant was instrumental in his sides try after a brilliant 40/20 kick early on ensured the Redbacks were on the attack inside the Hounds' danger zone.

It took just a few tackles for the Logan Redbacks to steamroll the UQ defence after prop Jerome Faraimo pushed his way past three defenders to score right next to the posts.

Oliphant was unable to convert his sides try but the Redbacks led 4-0.

On the next set, the Redbacks put the ball down on the halfway line and it was enough to get UQ on the board as they pushed their passes wide late in the tackle count for centre Brendan Colley to crash over.

UQ five eighth Lachlan Pill kicked a brilliant goal from the sideline to put his side ahead 6-4 after just 13 minutes of play.

It didn't take long for the next UQ try with interchange Nathan Quigley scoring out wide once again, showing vulnerability for the Redbacks right hand side defence.

Lachlan Pill was unable to convert this one but the Hounds led 10-4.

The next try came after UQ fullback Jarred Edwards made a brilliant line break before drawing and passing to hooker Ben Lonksy to score under the posts.

Pill converted and the UQ Hounds took a 16-4 lead into the break.

The second half was sloppy but a brilliant try was scored through UQ halfback Ben Tassell who ran 75 metres to put his side up 20-4.

In the end, the Redbacks couldn't capture their form that took them to the title last season as they fell 28-4.

In the other match of the night, the Griffith University Dragons were dominated by the Griffith University Gold Coast Panthers 34-0.

There was only one try in the first half to Panthers hooker Nathan Land which was converted to Matthew Beatten.

As the rain fell the flood gates opened and the Dragons would go on to concede six more tries.

In the final match, QUT Trouts defeated the USQ Ironbarks 20-0.

QUT Trouts

UQ Hounds

Harry Kirby Park - Aspley
